Anime Review:

Ayashi no Ceres is a anime that is not for the faint at heart. This anime deals with incredible angst and forms of incest (EWWW!) Despite these things, AnC comes out very well in my opinion. The angst, bloodshed, and feeling evoked from this series is one which made me look at anime in a whole different light. ANC is about a high-school girl named Aya, and her twin brother, Aki, who are turning 16. On this day, chaos is foretold, and yep.. it happens. Family members die and the Mikage ---her family--- want Aya dead because she is a potential threat to their 'clan'. Somehow, Aya escapes as new powers emerge from her body.

Aya later finds out that within her is Tennyo blood (kinda like a angel/demon's blood) which give her excessive power. Soon, she is fighting against the one she loves most... her twin brother. Along her struggle she meets her lover... Tooya... and many others who want to end the 'tennyo curse'. I won't give anything away but be warned... it is very SAD! Definitely not to be missed!

Ayashi no Ceres is another masterpiece coming from the mind of Yuu Watase. This manga and subsequent anime is a lot different from Watase-san's other works, including Fushigi Yuugi. What makes this anime different from the others is the dark theme that runs through the entire series.

I think I`m rating it fairly, but this is without a doubt going to be one of those favorites of mine that wouldn`t meet expectations of most people who would see it.

Aya Mikage and Aki Mikage are about to celebrate their 16th birthday. It seems like there`s something serious going on; the ENTIRE family shows up for the event! Soon Aya finds out why, and faces the cruel fate of all the members of her family born with the traits of an angel seeking revenge...

With a shocking start, Ayashi no Ceres begins as an extremely dark animated series. For a while it leaves the watcher in suspense as to who may die, as random characters are constantly murdered throughout the series. Then the hint of comedy kicks in, warming the story up, and also preparing the watcher for one of the most mature romances I`ve seen in anime.

Towards the end, more painful events occur, with a powerful and overall positive conclusion that left me astonished. This complete ride gives a sense of satisfaction with every single episode, as nothing in the story would really be worth leaving out.

From a visual point of view this show is fantstic. The proportions of the women in this art is conservative, but still sexually arousing. I find myself not so focused on their breasts or asses, but more into their feminine structure or proportions. The bishounen. This is a giveaway here. Many girl otakus I`ve known drool over the guys in Fushigi Yugi, so there is no surprise that this series would meet the same standards. I like the fact that the guys look manly, but beautiful at the same time, avoiding the "yaoi-style" girly appearance, and aimed towards the sexy side of masculinity.

From a story point of view the show is a bit choppy or disoriented, but due to the age of the anime, some leway can be given. The opening sequence is very beautiful, although I’ve never had the desire to pick it up. Most of the music proves to be wonderful as well, but I don’t find it as consuming as many other OSTs, so I have to say it’s somewhat average.

The seiyuu all do their part very well. Actually, I found Aya’s voice to fit her character considerably well, which isn’t the trend of the rest of the anime. Many of the character’s voices are a unique portrayal of their own characters, so I would say that the voice talent adds a different spice to character designs altogether.

This is definitely not an anime for those that want a happy, fuzzy, feel-good series. It deals with a lot of issues and there is a high level of angst. But if you can handle that, it is definitely worth watching.

Grade: B(plus) - The ending, which I won't give away, is very sad. It left me wanting to know more, and I wish the series lasted longer.
