Baccano! Specials - Anime Review

Information:

Alternative Title: Baccano! OVA

Synopsis:

NOTE: This OVA is a direct sequel to the first season, Baccano!. It is highly recommended you watch that first as knowledge of the first season is required for understanding this OVA. After Baccano became a tremendous hit, fans around the world were screaming for a second season. Although they didn’t get another season, they got a 3 episode OVA, which, in my opinion, is a much more suitable way to “end” this series as this is a near perfect OVA.

Infomation:

Although episode 13, the final episode, of the first season wasn’t inconclusive or loose ended in any way, most of us did want to know what exactly happened to the characters we laughed and cried with. For example, do Chane and Claire ever get together? How did Nice get those scars all over her body? Thankfully, this OVA provides all the answers. This time, you get a new point of view to look from: Graham Specter’s. This maniacal psychopath is Ladd Russo Jr. Although I did prefer Ladd, Graham is also one of anime’s best psychopaths. The way he incessantly talks about human feelings and everyday thoughts is certainly interesting, but does get a little annoying at times. One more thing about Graham: his voice actor. The English dub voice was way better than the Japanese one for the simple fact that an American voice suited this American better. The animation is the same as the first season, which is never a bad thing. As mentioned in my Baccano! Review, the animation here is wonderful. Brain’s Base hasn’t slacked off as the attention to detail is impeccable. The OP and ED for all 3 episodes are the same as the first season- “Guns N Roses” and “Calling”. No major soundtrack additions. A neat job by the audio department. All of your favorite characters are back and are as fresh as ever. Since the OVA picks up immediately where Baccano! left off, there has been no character development ( except for Chane maybe). And once again, lack of character development in this show is not a problem at all, because we love the characters for who they are and changing them all of a sudden would just be disrespectful to the fans. The same voice-actors have returned to lend their voices to these entertaining characters for one last time. (MILD SPOILERS – Skip to the next paragraph if you want the characters to remain a complete surprise.)On a side note, Claire Stanfield/Veno/Rail Tracer is all cleaned up and looks pretty handsome. The only drawback I had was that the fate of Dallas Genoard was not clearly revealed. After all that fuss about that delinquent, what happened to him? Guess we’ll never know.

All in all, these three episodes could’ve fit perfectly as episodes 14, 15 and 16 in the first season. But do buy the DVD to support Brain’s Base, the geniuses behind this wonderful anime.

Grade: A - If you watched Baccano!, the first season, then you must watch this. If you didn’t watch Baccano!, the first season, then please go and watch that first as both, the series and the OVA, are absolutely awesome.
