Blue Submarine No. 6 - Anime Review
Information:
Studio: GONZO
Licenced by: Bandai Entertainment
Length: 4 OAV
Year: 1999
Genre: Adventure, Mecha, Science-Fiction
Synopsis:
Blue Sub was one of the first anime pieces that Gonzo produced. And even though mixing 2-D and 3-D animation was just starting to head into the mainstream, I think Blue Sub was the first show that actually set a higher bar in how it could be done. The story is set in a futuristic Earth, that has been completely covered in water. A once respected scientist has given up on humanity, and melted the polar ice caps, and created a new line of mutant animal/humans to take over the world. The humans are forced to fight back by engaging these creatures in new giant agile submarines. Lots of action, and some of the best early 3-D effects in anime at the time, with an interesting take on the future of mankind. Review:
The anime had quality animation, nothing impressive but generally the animation stayed at a consistent quality. Then there's the 3D CG animation, which is beautiful and fantastic...Sadly though, while the 2D animation looks great alone, and the 3D looks excellent by itself as well, when placed together it clashes severely...some work definitely could've been done making the two styles compliment each other better.
The character designs are great as well, each with their own special personality and identity; the mutant designs were particularly impressive. Thanks to some of the cast's personal reaction to certain event sets them apart from being Generic DudeGuy A, and allows some of the serie's themes to shine through (coexistence, peace, etc).
The music is jazzy and nice to hear as well, but this music sometimes sounds really cheery and optimistic, which definitely sounds out of place in a dramatic submarine battle.
The story you'll have to make out for yourself. I personally found it slightly cheesey, although that might be just because I've heard about one-too many Sci-Fi novels about a scientist who plans to use mutants to basically take over or destroy the world. However, many others disagree with me and say the story is fabulous. Me personally, it was just hard to take talking mutant aquatic creatures seriously, after growing up on, say... Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Street Sharks, et cetera. But really this is more of a personal problem, but see for yourself.
Grade - C - If you're looking for a nice sci-fi/action show, you probably should check this title out. Probably.
