Bubblegum Crisis - Anime Review

Information:

Studio: Anime International Company, Inc.
Licenced by: AnimEigo
Length: 8 Episodes
Year: 1987
Genre: Action, Adventure, Mecha, Science-Fiction

Synopsis :
This cyberpunk-esque series is a mecha-type anime that has many parallels to the movie Bladerunner. It is set in the year 2032. In 2025 there was a massive earthquake in the city of Tokyo that basically leveled the entire city. Upon the rubble of Old Tokyo, the Genom Corporation rebuilt the city, which became known as MegaTokyo. The Genom Corporation is a powerful corporation that also builds bio-mechanical robots known as Boomers. Unfortunately, the Boomers went berserk upon the city and the police had to be called in. When the police are not strong enough (which is just about always), a small, private group known as the Knight Sabers come in to stop the rampaging Boomers. The Knights Sabers are a group of four women: Sylia, Priss, Linna and Nene. Their suits are made from the most cutting edge technology and the only thing in the world that truly have enough fire power to stop the Boomers. The Knight Sabers resist the growing threat of the Genom Corp. and their Boomers where the police and the government cannot. All the Knight Sabers of course have day jobs and they must keep their identities secret. Nene is a traffic cop, Linna teaches aerobics, Sylia owns the 'Silky Doll' lingerie shop while Priss is a rock idol. Sylia is also the daughter of the inventor of the Boomers, Dr. Stingray, hence why she has the ability to design and create such powerful power suits.

Review:

Bubblegum Crisis is still considered a favourite by many at old-timers that have been watching anime for decades. Made in 1987, it is now over 20 years old. So, is it still worthy of your attention? The animation of the anime now looks dated as can be expected of a show from 1987. It does not compare visually to the recently updated "Bubblegum Crisis 2040". If you can look past the age, you will find that the animation quality was not all that bad. The story focuses on the 4 main heroines who form the Knight Sabers, as they fight against the Genom Corporation in 2032 Tokyo. The premise and story does not appear at all original, until you realise that this PRE-DATED nearly all the anime releases since 1990. So if you’ve seen plenty of powersuited anime mecha with pretty girls, you’ll see that this was one of the very first works dealing with the genre. I was impressed with how much was crammed into the 8 episodes. Generally, very entertaining stuff. The characters of the anime for the show of this length is excellent. Each of the Knight Sabers had a distinct and unique appearance and personality. Even though if you have not seen the 2040 version in its entirety, I much prefer the characters from this 1987 release. The music unusually, there were a large number of different OPs and EDs for a show spanning only 8 episodes. Typically ‘Rock’ in nature, it reflected the musical tastes of the 80s. Good song choices with a decent score too.

Grade - B (plus) - It is old, it is dated, but it is still cool. I was never a big fan of Bubblegum Crisis, but I can still appreciate why even to this day, there is such a devoted fanbase for this 80’s classic. Younger fans or those who prefer more recent mecha shows will find this fairly average. Those of you were grew up and lived with 80’s anime would love this, as would fans of female dominated mecha shows.
