Review:
Bubblegum Crisis is still considered a favourite by many at old-timers that have been watching anime for decades. Made in 1987, it is now over 20 years old. So, is it still worthy of your attention? The animation of the anime now looks dated as can be expected of a show from 1987. It does not compare visually to the recently updated "Bubblegum Crisis 2040". If you can look past the age, you will find that the animation quality was not all that bad. The story focuses on the 4 main heroines who form the Knight Sabers, as they fight against the Genom Corporation in 2032 Tokyo. The premise and story does not appear at all original, until you realise that this PRE-DATED nearly all the anime releases since 1990. So if you’ve seen plenty of powersuited anime mecha with pretty girls, you’ll see that this was one of the very first works dealing with the genre. I was impressed with how much was crammed into the 8 episodes. Generally, very entertaining stuff. The characters of the anime for the show of this length is excellent. Each of the Knight Sabers had a distinct and unique appearance and personality. Even though if you have not seen the 2040 version in its entirety, I much prefer the characters from this 1987 release. The music unusually, there were a large number of different OPs and EDs for a show spanning only 8 episodes. Typically ‘Rock’ in nature, it reflected the musical tastes of the 80s. Good song choices with a decent score too.
Grade - B (plus) - It is old, it is dated, but it is still cool. I was never a big fan of Bubblegum Crisis, but I can still appreciate why even to this day, there is such a devoted fanbase for this 80’s classic. Younger fans or those who prefer more recent mecha shows will find this fairly average. Those of you were grew up and lived with 80’s anime would love this, as would fans of female dominated mecha shows.
