Crunchyroll to Simulcast Aniplex's So-Ra-No-Wo-To Anime - Anime News

The Crunchyroll media-distribution website has announced on Friday that it will simulcast A-1 Pictures and Aniplex's So-Ra-No-Wo-To (Sounds of the Skies) anime series. The series premiered on TV Tokyo on Monday as the first release in Anime no Chikara (The Strength of Anime), a joint project of TV Tokyo's new anime department and Aniplex.

The story of the anime is set in the future on a land that, after being devastated by long-lasting wars, has settled into quiet decline. Model and actress Juri Aikawa plays Kanata Kumika, a 15-year-old girl who fulfills her dream of enlisting in the army and joins a unit of five girls who protect a fortress. The girls also play music that reverberate across the skies over towns without people and seas without fish.

For So-Ra-No-Wo-To, Mamoru Kanbe (Elfen Lied, I''s Pure, Denpa teki na Kanojo) is directing the animators at A-1 Pictures. Hiroyuki Yoshino (Macross Frontier, Denpa teki na Kanojo, My-HiME) is supervising the scripts. Mel Kishida, the character designer of Gust's Rorona no Atelier ~Aarando no Renkinjutsushi~ role-playing game and an illustrator of several novel series, is creating the original character designs which Toshifumi Akai (key animator on Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) will adapt into anime. Michiru Oshima (Fullmetal Alchemist, Boys Over Flowers, Gokusen, Magic User's Club, Legend of Crystania, live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) is composing the music.

Crunchyroll's video streams will be available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. Crunchyroll's subscribed Anime Members can see each episode, in standard 480-line progressive resolution, within an hour of its Japanese premiere. Other users can see the same episode in standard definition for free one week later.

Update: More background information added.
