Gainax Launches Anime Lecture Series Online - Anime News
Anime production studio Gainax has launched a series of "lectures" on creating anime this month. The first lecture is a text transcript of an in-person lesson given by Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of FLCL and Aim for the Top 2! (Gunbuster 2/Diebuster), to the Gainax anime staff in 2008. In the lecture, Tsurumaki notes that he learned storyboarding by watching others, and that his only "rules" are stage left (kamite) and stage right (shimote), and the imaginary line between characters. The first lecture also includes a glossary and visuals to further explain the points made, and Tsurumaki's second lecture has since been posted on Wednesday.
In addition to his directorial work, Tsurumaki is a co-director on Hideaki Anno's new film remakes of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion television anime series. Tsurumaki made two U.S. appearances to promote FLCL in the United States in 2001: one at Otakon and one at the OmochaBox store in Los Angeles.
The Gainax anime studio is known for many popular anime works, most notably Neon Genesis Evangelion, along with the 2008 television anime Gurren Lagann and the the 2000 video series FLCL. The studio's most recent anime was the adaptation of Yuto's manga Hanamaru Kindergarten. Next on Gainax's docket are the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt television anime and a "more refined" anime adaptation of the light novel series Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian.
