Review:
Let me start off by saying, you should really read the manga books before watching this OVA, as anyone who hasn't, won't be very impressed with what is dished up in the Gravi OVA! If on the other hand, you have read the manga books, you will appreciate this for what it is; a nice snippet of the story, but animated!
This OVA was made the year before the TV series and basically it was made purely for the true fans of the Gravi manga series, as the creators assume from the start that the viewer is familiar with the story (not the anime TV series!) and it mostly concentrates on the problems Shiucchi is having with Yuki ignoring him and writing a song for Nittle Grasper. It's based around the halfway mark in the manga series (vol 6 or 7). For fans of the manga this is a perfect little OVA to watch. The music is wonderful and you get to hear Bad Luck sing Spicy Marmalade - what could be better. For fans of the TV series only, this may seem a little lacking in comparison.
The animation is ok, so compared to the TV series, the animation of the OVA can be seen as somewhat lacking. There are none of those bright vivid colours one associates with the characters, like Shuicchi's bright pink hair and vivid violet eyes. On the other hand, fans of the manga will appreciate the fact that Shuicchi's hair is the colour it is supposed to be and he has the green eyes he is supposed to have! All the character designs are so true to the original manga artwork, it's quite a pleasure to see! The only real complaint I have is the way the characters are animated on stage when they're singing. No effort was put into to making sure they were dancing to the rythmn of the music or that their lips were moving in sync with the lyrics they were singing.
The sound is a heavenly pleasure in every way! Having all the Gravi music CDs, I knew all of the songs before I watched the OVA and it was wonderful to hear Spicy Marmalade and Smashing Blue and to actually hear a decent rendition by Nittle Grasper! The seiyuu chosen for the OVA were all used for the TV series a year later and you can't fault any of them! It does seem strange to hear Inuyasha's voice coming out of Ryuicchi though, but I love Kappei Yamaguchi and thought he sounded wonderful in the role.
The storyline as a stand alone, or as a lot of people seem to think, a continuation of the TV series, this Gravi OVA may seem somewhat disjointed, but as a reader and major fan of Maki Murakami's manga series, this OVA is wonderful! Try reading the first 5 or 6 volumes of the manga and then watching the OVA and you will be able to appreciate it for what it is - an OVA of the manga *lol* The creators took a very important part of the story and turned it into an anime.
Shuicchi is going through a slump and he can't shake the first words he ever heard from Yuki - you can't write love songs, give up now! He then finds out that Yuki is being so cold towards him because he's writing lyrics for Bad Luck's rivals. Luckily everything turns out right in the end and Shuicchi gets to sing on stage with his idol (or as he refers to him "his god" *lol*). At this point in the story, Shuicchi and Yuki's affair hasn't been consumated, it's early days still! You can't help but love his dream of being intimate with Yuki, it ends so funny (I never really imagined Yuki as a thong guy, more a boxers guy *lol*). Those 60 minutes were pure heaven and everything about it is so true to the manga, including the personalities of the characters. I personally wish the TV series had been made the same way as this OVA!
The characters when compared to the manga, which is really the only way to do it! the characters are perfection. They are more true to themselves in the OVA. Especially Yuki's little brother; Tatsuha! Don't compare this to the TV series. Don't watch this thinking it's going to be anything like the TV series. Do watch this is you are a fan of the manga.
Do watch this is you are a fan of Gravitation in it's entirity!I could watch this over and over again.
Grade - B (plus) - Everything about it is wonderful, the music, the characters, the storyline - Everything.
