Alternate Title: Gekijouban Macross 7: Ginga ga Ore wo Yondeiru!

Studio: Ashi Productions Co., Ltd.
Also involved: Big West
Length: 1 Movie
Year: 1995
Genre: Science-Fiction, Mecha, Comedy, Adventure, Action

Synopsis:

While experimenting to increase their music's effectiveness with the Protodeviln, Fire Bomber picks up a strange, but powerful sound. When Basara runs off to investigate it, he ends up in a cold, frozen planet with an impoverished mining settlement and a lone Zentradi practicing and training to make her own music.

Additional Notes: The events of this movie take place around episodes 39-42 of the Macross 7 TV series, like Macross 7 Encore.

Review:

The label "movie" is applied rather liberally to The Galaxy's Calling Me!. Yes it did show on theaters, but it was part of a double feature with Macross Plus, which was the real focus. Therefore, TGCM got treated as little more than an extra, is only slightly longer than your average TV series episode, and has an intranscendent story; functioning as sort of yet another add-on to the last episodic part of Macross 7. TGCM could well be considered as just standalone episode of the TV series, in which Basara decides to go on with his selfish antics, gets himself in trouble, but powers through thanks to his singing. Along the way we are introduced to two more characters, but they just have bearing in this particular story. Character development is pretty much nonexistent (as is the case with most of Macross 7), and the story is nothing new under the sun... especially if you're already familiar with the way the TV series works. One thing that has improved is the animation, which makes sense since sub par animation would have only made this "movie" much more unremarkable. It's still no masterpiece, but at least TGCM manages to look better than most of the TV series. The music follows your typical Macross 7 standard, it' not that awesome but can be kind of cool for trained ears. TGCM is rather worthless a movie. Only watch it if you liked the Macross 7 TV series and aren't sick of it, because it is just more of the same. Avoid otherwise, since context from the TV series is required to make sense of it. I wasn't all that fond of it. While I gave Macross 7 a higher score, that was because of the way it came together as a whole. This movie, on the other hand, does not stand well on its own and doesn't add anything to that larger whole. It might be neat to see Basara in another of his adventures, but with everything working out the way it ALWAYS does, TGCM is just not that interesting.

Grade: D - Short, dull and uninspiring to watch.
