Anime Review:
This anime tv series is based upon a video game in which was originally a dating simulation game for the Game Boy Advance. Unlike most dating sims though, in Meine Liebe you play the girl trying to win over the heart of the guy of your dreams (this also is why some advertising for the series says "Boys for Girls"). As the girl character of this game you have to balance school with fun, spend time with your girl pals, and still find time to get in touch with your favorite guy. Being a dating sim coversion, like KNG, and Air TV, this anime series is in the exception category, in which is a very yummy treat for fangirls, sorry anime fans in general.
Meine Liebe, as you might have known, is German for ?My Love?, therefore, many names and terms throughout the anime are German-based. The anime is set in a country called Kuchen, which does not exist in our world. It is situated south of Ireland, west of France, where the Bay of Biscay should be.
The five main characters are Strahl candidates. They all attend Rosenstolz Academy and are Strahl candidates. Whoever graduates top from the Academy, has the potential to become a member of the Strahl. The Strahl is basically the King's advisory group, they help the King make decisions, govern the country and undergo other similar tasks.
The five characters are Naoji, Orpherus, Eduard, Ludwig and Camus. Pride and reputation are quite an important part of their lives. They are all of high nobility, as family status, intelligence and popularity is crucial in becoming a member of the prestigious Strahl. All of these characters are unique and have their own personality.
Orpherus and Eduard are childhood friends and are still the best of friends now. They look out and stand up for each other and support each other in every way possible. They also seem to be people who care deeply for their family.
Ludwig and Camus are also childhood friends, but are very different. Ludwig is all about pride and reputation, he is riddled with stubbornness and overconfidence. Publicly, he seems to dislike Orpherus and Eduard, but deep down, he does acknowledge them and doesn?t seem to hate them. Camus is the short guy who looks like a female sometimes. He has very low self-esteem and has no confidence whatsoever, he even tries to model himself on Ludwig. However, Camus does have his own specialties. Apparently, he is psychic as it appears he can foresee future events. Additionally, he can communicate and converse with flowers.
Naoji is the only Japanese person, and seems to be very calm and collected. Being an enthusiast in Kendo, he is acquainted with every Strahl candidate and seems to follow Ludwig around a lot.
Meine Liebe, however, lacks a clear and distinct plot. After learning about the Strahl candidates situation, one would assume that all these characters were striving to become Strahl members. However, the impression that I am getting, is that becoming a Strahl member isn?t the only thing on their minds. Meine Liebe is more revolved around character development. At the start of each episode, they play a short flashback of the childhoods of the five main Strahl candidates, which tell us a lot about their past, and ultimately about who they are now. As I have stated previously, each character is very unique and develop their own personalities, and it is quite enjoyable to see how these contrasting demeanors interact with each other.
Another aspect of Meine Lieve which is worthy of mention is the background music. Most of the time, it is orchestral pieces that are very appealing to the ear, so look out for the OST. The art is nothing spectacular, but is still nicely done. The art reminds me very much of Full Metal Alchemist.Meine Liebe is an anime that would fit under the drama genre. It is certainly not an anime everyone will enjoy. It is not comedic, and the action scenes are limited to barely a minute at the maximum. Again, the mood of the anime is quite serious and will appeal to the more mature anime fans who are looking for an anime which has meaning and has great character development.
A special mention has to go to Takehito Koyasu who voices Sir Isaac in the tv series. He has also done:
Gravitation: Lyrics of Love (OAV) - as Sakano
Gundam Wing Endless Waltz Special Edition (tv/movie) - as Zechs Merquise
Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) - as Touga Kiryuu
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (TV) - as Neo Lorrnoke / Mu La Flaga
and is a treat to listen too.
Grade: A(minus) - This show is full of ambition, betrayal, rivalry, and love. This ultra PRETTY boy bishounen anime, is not one to be missed.
