Possibility of New Minky Momo TV Series Alluded - Anime News

The producers of this spring's Fairy Princess Minky Momo musical alluded to the possibility of a new television series during the Tuesday press conference for the musical. Musical Minky Momo: Kagami no Kuni no Princess is part of the 30th Anniversary celebration for Production Reed's original Fairy Princess Minky Momo magical girl anime, which actually aired from 1982 to 1983.

Ichiro Fujimori is directing the musical, and Ouji Hiroi, the creator of the Sakura Wars game and anime franchise, wrote the script that creates a new world not seen in the previous anime incarnations. Mirronasa (Miranaasa) is a land through the looking glass where people are without dreams or hopes. (The title of the musical is a reference to the Japanese title for Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.) The heroine Momo has arrived at the outskirts on London and fights a physical manifestation of nightmares to take back the people's dreams and hopes.

Asami Katsura, actress who appeared in Battle Royale II: Requiem and the stage versions of Boys Be… and Licca-chan, will play the adult version of Minky Momo. Sayaka Akimoto of the AKB48 female idol group will play Nightmare, an original character created for the musical. 700 actresses auditioned for the role of the child version of Minky Momo, and Anna Ichioka and Miku Katsunuma won the shared role. The musical will run Tokyo's Ikebukuro Sunshine Gekijo theater from April 29 to May 5 during Japan's Golden Week holidays.

Mami Koyama voiced the title role in the first Minky Momo series, although Megumi Hayashibara assumed the role in the 1991 Mahou no Princess Minky Momo: Yume wo Dakishimete television series and its two video sequels. There has not been a major new Minky Momo anime since 1994's Minky Momo in Tabidachi no Eki video.
