Princess Princess - Anime Review

Information:

Studio: Studio DEEN
Length: 12 Episodes
Year: 2006
Genre: Shounen-ai, Comedy

Synopsis:

Toru suddenly transfered to an all-boys school because of circumstances at home. On his way there, he sees a stunning girl dressed in frilly lolita-like clothing. He's taken aback since he's positive that it's an all-boys school. After an awkwardly 'warm' welcome, he soon finds out that he is nominated as a "Princess". Their duty is to dress up as a girl (in frilly clothes) to downplay the masculinity level of the school. They tell him that he has exceptionally good looks and tell him the many benefits of becoming a Princess. Of course Toru immediately refuses to accept the position!

Review:

Princess Princess (PP) is definitely not your average anime out there. Though with shounen-ai as part of the genre, do let me assure you that all our main characters and support characters which consist of MALE almost 90% were definitely NOT into same sex relationship. As the matter infact they’re attracted to opposite sex so I suppose this anime being a shounen-ai isn’t really suitable. The story resolves around our 3 main characters and how they pass through their everyday school life as “Princess" which turns out to be the school Idol.

The main attraction of this anime to me is perhaps the never ending comedy as well as the often unexpected twist and surprises.

Of course! Our Beautiful Heroes is definitely one of the few reasons I was attracted to this series anyways. Apart from their amazing costume and how they dress themselves as a girl, I thank god that they don’t sound like one or I seriously gonna fall for them.Well we do have other good looking guys (The Student Council members) around in PP and perhaps that’s why this anime is the selection of many female anime fans. However it doesn’t mean a guy can’t enjoy PP due to its genre.

Another reason I found this anime rather amusing is the Sakamoto’s Family, I’m sure those who watch PP would remember that particular ep featuring about Sakamoto’s Family for life.

The dictator President of the student Council as well as how they run things is definitely out of the world. The character development was very throughout despite being a short series.

The Chibi mode as well as the detailed artwork when it comes to character design seriously attracted me.

Well, they are guys after all in girl’s outfit. I admit they’re good with those girlish appearance but I rather wish their voice would be more girlish rather then those guys trying to make themselves sounds like a girl which give me the shivers. (Though it may be bad to my mental health as I have already mention previously but certianly it would be better than a Male Voice trying hard to sound like Female, Paku is doing a good job though~ Since she is the only female seiyuu voicing Yuujirou which is one of the main characters)

Oh did I mention their singing sucks? Well if you would ask me the music in this anime isn’t particular attractive at all, at least that’s me from the guy point of view.

Seriously, this is a very entertaining series. I have had a hell of a good time watching it, and of course the pros pretty much covered up the cons.

How I wish there's gonna be a 2nd season. Though Princess Princess may not be a family anime, but I recommend this series to everyone who is open minded and willing to give it a try.

Grade: A (minus) - I say check out this series and ignore the fact that it says Shounen-ai. Want a good laugh? This is it right here.
