Rurouni Kenshin: Reminiscence - Anime Review

Information:

Alternate title : Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal
Studio: Studio DEEN
Length: 4 OAV
Year: 1999
Genre: Gore, Drama, Romance, Historical

Synopsis:

The first Rururoni Kenshin OAV's are a look back into Kenshin's past. (See Ruroni Kenshin series synopsis for details on the characters.) The animation style is a stark contrast to the TV series, and the atmosphere is much darker and grittier as well. This is the story of how Kenshin came to be, and what made him the way he is. A great soundtrack, and smooth clean animation with a great story to tell.

Review:

Reminiscence is an anime masterpiece. It marks the beginning and end of our beloved hero. If you're expecting the OVA to be similar to the TV series, you couldn't be more wrong.

The mood in the OVA is much darker, solemn and heart-wrenching... the OVAs pack an emotional powerhouse. The graphics are smooth, fluid, and detailed, and the music fits into the story in haunting perfection. The art direction is a masterclass... manyof the feelings and thoughts you experience throughout the show are caught from symbolic actions and metaphoric abstracts (like the tasting of sake, Kenshin's spinning his toy, and the subtle gentleness both tomoe and kenshin show each other) and none of it seems forced or awkward. The beauty of Reminiscence is its ability to invoke powerful feelings with its subtlety, making the re-watch value of the OVAs extremely high.

The voice acting is top-class (I'm referring to the Japanese dubs). Kenshin's voice is low, calm, and emotionless with a touch of femininity. Tomoe's voice is very well-controlled, reflecting the depth of her personality and character. Kenshin, the "battousai," though invincible and powerful in sword skills, is extremely realistic, making Reminiscence one of the few animes that has believable characters.

The pace of the anime is also very well done. From the fascinating, brutal start to the peaceful, quiet development of Kenshin and Tomoe's relationship to the climatic tragic finale, every part of the OVA keeps you enthralled.

In conclusion, Reminiscence in all aspects of an anime from art direction, character depth and development, graphics and music, ranks as one of the best anime ever.

Together with Seisouhen, the OVAs closed the story of the 'Battousai' in the most beautiful and tragic ending possible.

Grade - A - A must watch!
