ICv2 reports that Warner Bros.’ new live action Speed Racer film earned only $20.2 during its opening weekend, far below even its scaled-down pre-premiere estimated gross of $30 million. Reportedly the film’s reception overseas has been even worse, despite receiving an average “A-” Cinemascore score from viewers. An especially poor showing from Speed Racer may cause Hollywood’s studios to reconsider the viability of major American films based on anime licenses.
